Hello Wine Lovers:
In preparation for the super wine tasting I am holding on the 29th I have prepared a few notes from the internet on the wines I will be featuring. All these wines are exceptional from a taste perspective as well as pricing. To be sure I have many more less expensive (and more expensive) wines but these 20 wines represent a great cross section of what you should have for the Christmas season. All will be good for serving guests and family at parties. In addition, some of them have unique labels such that they would be suitable for gift giving.
Most of the reds are easy sipping, not requiring food to match their power. They are mostly blends or lesser tannic wines like Barbera, Pinot Noir or Zinfandel, that are well on their own or will match turkey and its variety of spices. The whites will be fantastic at either a party or with Christmas dinner. You will have a chance to try these for free on the 29th and judge for yourself.
The tasting will start at noon and will finish about 7pm. The wines will be available for tasting all day but there may not be anyone to assist you except the cashier. (ie. I will not be there before noon or after 7pm).
You will be able to buy bottles of any of the wines featured at a 5% discount from the posted price on the 29th. If you wish to order a case I will bring it in the following week at 10% off. All other wines in the store will be availble at 5% off that day but will not be tasted at that time.
In addition, I will have some Reidel glasses on hand that you may buy at a discount and sip your wine with.
1 CHATEAU D'ORIGNAC, PINEAU DES CHARENTES - $39.99, pineau des charentes is a fantastic aperitif for your guests at Christmas, made with cognac and red wine. Chateau d'Orignac makes one of the finest on the market. Serve chilled and over a frozen grape (seriously). Intense, elegant and distinguished, this Pineau is the inimitable fusion of roundness and elegance, that makes it one of the most famous ambassadors of its appellation.
2 QUINTA DE VENTOZELO 10 YR TAWNY PORT $39.99 - port is very much an after dinner drink, served with a strong cheese course like stilton or gorgonzola, and sometimes with cigars for those who still indulge. Mainly the five classic Port varieties: Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca and Tinta
3 Luis Pato Maria Gomes $19.99 , the Luis Pato is a unique champagne style sparkling wine from Portugal at half the price and most of the taste of champagne. The Maria Gomes Bruto is perfumy, tropical, but dry, with a bit of a spice on the finish.
4. TOAD HOLLOW AMPLEXUS $27.99 This unique Sparkling white from France has a distinctive label that would make a great gift as well as great taste.
5. Chateau Guiraud $24.99, is a Bordeaux white with semillon and sauvignon blanc in the blend. This is one of the best value white wines in my inventory. The winery is renowned for their sauterne sweet wines as well. Once you have tasted this beauty you will want this for your white wine selection.
6 Prado Rey Birchlo $17.99 A verdejo from Rueda in Spain, this is a lovely crips, acidic cocktail party white wine. This is a wine made from 60 year old Verdejo and Viura vines that is showing a lovely light straw colour with strokes of green. Tropical fruit aromas give way to a fresh lively palate with good acidity and balance through to the pleasant aftertaste.
7. Zerba Cellars Columbia Valley Wild White 2006 Our 2006 Columbia Valley “Wild White” is a medium-bodied, dry white wine with orange blossom, honyesuckle and exotic floral aromas. Orange blossom and honeysuckle flavors mingle with hints of pepper and spicy cedar. Fat mouthfeel and a smooth, lingering finish make this a very enjoyable wine. This is a must with turkey for the white wine lover.
8 Chateau Mondorion Saint Emilion Gr Cru $43.99, is a fabulous Bordeaux red. A delicious Merlot based wine featuring ripe plum, cherry and dark fruit flavors with a delicate touch of chocolate on the long, smooth, velvety finish. Ready to drink. A great value from the family of longtime Mouton Rothschild winemaker Patrick Leon. How merlot is supposed to taste.
9. La MARESCIALLA' BARBERA D'ASTI $36.99 , this is a medium bofdied but elegant wine from the Piedmont region of italy. The Marescialla has an elegant label that makes it an attractive Christmas gift.
10. EMILIO MORO FINCA RESALSOAT $23.99, a lovely Spanish red from the Ribera del Duero, based on the tempranillo grape, grafted onto old vines, where the roots run deep..
11. GASSAC SOL DE LANDOC $21.99, a beautiful full to medium red from the Languedoc region of France. This is a grenache shiraz blend (50/50). This wine has had fabulous reviews from some of the world wine masters.
'Major Grand Cru' by Oz Clarke,
'one of the world's ten best wines' by Michael Broadbent of the white,
'Exceptional' from Parker,
'Outstanding' in the Wine Spectator ……? " Which "Vin de Pays" eludes any attempt at comparison but when young reminds you of a great Medoc whilst, as it ages, is redolent of the undergrowth and truffles found in great Burgundies "
What other mere "Vin de Pays ", has been hailed 'the only Grand Cru in the Midi' by Hugh Johnson,
12.Chateau Smith CABERNET SAUVIGNON $30.99, a former rock musician who has taken his love of wine to a fabulous new career, superb winemaker. This is a suerb Cabernet that will go well with fine beef dishes. Not Bordeaux. Pure Washington! Cedar, No2 pencil, tobacco leaf. There is a ribbon of red currant running through the core of the beautiful and complex Cabernet Sauvignon.
13. Quinta de Mouro Alento 2006 . $19.99 This is a superb Portugal red, deep ruby / garnet coloured wine with complex aromas of sweet spice, figs and bramble fruits. Dry with soft mellow tannins, lovely weight of mature autumn berries with cigar box and vanilla tones. Long lingering finish with excellent weight and balance. However in addition to the taste, it has a unique label that mnakes it an attractive gift bottle.
14 DOMAINE DU TRILLOL $14.99 (Available by the case on the 29th @ 10% OFF). This is normally a $20 wine but I have obtained ten cases at a fantastic discount. This is probably the red wine you should have for a Christmas party. Another from the Sichel stable (Bordeaux Chateaux d`Angludet, d`Argadens, etc), so quality and value are assured. A blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault, the wine shows a wonderful perfumed intensity, which leads to a palate of spice, plums, and herbs. It shows incredible freshness and lightness and displays a long lingering finish. Good fruit concentration gives a hint of the stringent yields. Great by itself, with cheese, or with cassoulet.
15 AT BARRANDICA $20.99 This is a fabuous Bordeaux blend from Argentina at a very attractive price. The label is very smart and will make a lovely gift wine.(50% Merlot - 40% Cabernet Sauvignon - 10% Malbec )
16 Rombauer Zinfandel $42.99 A beautiful California zinfandel that is rich tasting on its own but will make a great pairing with Christmas dinner. The wine is full flavored with an abundance of fresh, dark berry fruit and hints of currants. There is a long finish to the wine that continues to reveal subtle berry fruit nuances. It drinks well now but will improve with several years of age.
17 KILIKANOON KILLERMAN'S RUN SHIRAZ $27.99 No list is complete without wines from Australia. This rich tasting Shiraz from Kilakanoon is exceptional. Palate: balanced and lengthened by the older oak flavours. A sweet mid palate, soft tannins and warmth of character have created a wine with both power and finesse. Cellaring potential of at least 6 – 8 years
18 D'ARENBERG D'ARRY'S ORIGINAL GRENACHE/SHIRAZ $20.99. One of D'Arenbergs outstanding wines at a good price. d'Arry's Original is very much a traditional style of wine, being rich, lucious and opulently soft and very much an expression of terroir and variety which ages spectacularly. The final blend varies from year to year in an effort to maintain the well-established hallmarks of d'Arry's Original.
19 VILLA MARIA PRIVATE BIN PINOT NOIR $25.99. I love Pinot Noir and this is a well priced version from New Zealand. Pinot Noir is my favourite Christmas dinner wine as the flavours blend so well with all aspects of the turkey. A perfumed bouquet of ripe cherries and raspberry fruits, hallmarks of Marlborough Pinot Noir. On the palate the wine displays ripe fruit with complex savoury and spice elements. Soft, silky, fine-grained tannins provide structure and definition, yet also allows for immediate consumption.
20 DE ANGELIS ANGHELOS IGT $39.99. Every Christmas needs a super Italian IGT and De Anghelis fills the bill. A blend of Sangiovese, cabernet and a few other grapes, it also has a nice Christmassy name and label for a great gift. Ripe concentrated fruity compote with hints of dark cherry and. Spicy peppery palate with velvety tannins and powerful impressive structure. Fruit forward, seductive finish. A wine capable of ageing.
These are the 20 I am featuring at the tasting. May I suggest you print this off (I have also attached a word doc of the same notes) and bring it along on the day. You may e-mail me or phone anytime to discuss special orders. I have access to the best wines in Alberta and I usually only need a few days to set up ordering it. In addition, there are scores of great wines at both stores which I know you will love.
See you on the 29th.
Cheers,
Paul
